Amicus Curiae La Parota

Mexican and international organizations submitted an Amicus Curiae to the Collegiate Tribunal of Guerrero in Acapulco in support of a constitutional lawsuit brought by CECOP and the Mexican Center for Environmental Law against the Federal Commission of Electricity (CFE) and other authorities. The lawsuit alleges that the Mexican authorities failed to consult with affected parties and adequately evaluate the environmental impacts of construction of the La Parota dam. Guatemala

The Guatemalan government plans to build close to 20 hydroelectric projects in the next 20 years in order to diversify the country's energy supply. Among the most controversial projects planned in Guatemala is the Xalala Dam on the Chixoy River, which would affect more than 10,000 indigenous people who firmly oppose the project.

Ecuador

Ecuador has the highest biodiversity per square foot in the world. More than 2,265 streams and rivers cascade down from the Andes mountain range into the Amazon or the Pacific Ocean. Ecuador has proposed up to 226 new hydroelectric projects over the next decades, which will leave a large environmental footprint on its river ecosystems.

Panama

In 2007, International Rivers began to work closely with Panamanian organization Alliance for Conservation and Development (ACD), indigenous peoples and others to stop dam projects for the Changuinola-Teribe Basin. On the Changuinola River, US energy giant AES is planning four dams. The first, Chan 75, is currently under construction and will forcibly displace more than 1,000 Ngobe indigenous peoples and harm the livelihoods of 4,000 more.
