For this second quarter update, I've introduced some new analyses (see below), along with those similar to the first quarter blog update. You can also get weekly email updates of CDM hydro projects and see our monthly spreadsheet, always available for your research and gleaning pleasure. Data based on the UNEP Risoe spreadsheet (June 1, 2009). Feel free to contact me about my calculations.

Updates:

Fig. 2: Projects requesting registration by year.
The second quarter shows a continuation of the downward trend this year of the number of CDM projects being submitted for public comment (the first stage of the CDM's formal project approval process). The number of hydro projects being submitted for comments in particular appears to be dropping rapidly since peaking in 2007 (see Fig. 1).
  • The percent of projects rejected out of the total number of projects requesting registration was 7.5% in 2007 and 3.5% in 2008 (this does not include withdrawn projects). See here for more on the poor performance of the biggest project auditors.
  • Fig. 3: Percentages of registered projects each year that required a review or corrections
Fig. 3: Percentages of registered projects each year that required a review or corrections
As of this week, 22% of the total CDM hydro projects have been registered (see spreadsheet). Fig. 2 shows the fate of projects requesting registration by year. 43% of all hydro projects entering the CDM pipeline have so far requested for registration.
  • Fig. 3 shows that the number of registered projects are being registered, but also that there are an increasing proportion of projects for which the Executive Board has requested corrections or a review. Perhaps the EB is showing a heightened awareness of additionality problems, particularly for those located in China, which form the majority of projects in the CDM pipeline (see Fig. 4).
