Lake Turkana Under Threat

Lake Turkana
Visit Friends of Lake Turkana Lake Turkana is a miraculous anomaly of life-giving water in a parched and unforgiving land. Formed millions of years ago in the tectonic upheavals that created East Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Turkana is the largest permanent desert lake in the world. The lake is home to the world's largest population of Nile crocodiles, hippos, and hundreds of bird and fish species. Its shores have revealed the oldest-known fossil remains of Homo habilis. Today, more than a quarter million indigenous peoples from at least ten tribes have become masters of wresting sustenance f

The most contentious aspect of Son La resettlement is the availability of sufficient arable land to replace what is being flooded by the reservoir. The researchers found that many oustees were returning to their old lands to grow rice for their families. Once the reservoir is filled in 2010, it is unclear how they will feed their famili

This letter to the Asian Development Bank outlines ongoing problems with water supply and fisheries compensation in villages affected by Nam Leuk and Nam Song, as discovered by a researcher who visited the area in March 2008.
