On April 19th, the City College of San Francisco will host a seminar called "The Mekong: A River Under Stress." Scientists from Vietnam will present on the current situation of dam building on the Mekong, the legal protections for the river, and the potential downstream impacts dams like Xayaburi would have on the millions that depend on the river. International Rivers will present on the current status of Xayaburi and civil society actions to protect the river and seek better energy solutions. In February, participants from the first Task Force on the Americas delegation to Panama visited and took testimony from members of the Ngäbe-Bugle community near the Barro Blanco Hydroelectric Dam on the Tabasará River. Despite unresolved issues around a lack of consultation with the local indigenous peoples and allegations of human rights abuses, the reservoir created by the dam will likely start flooding fertile agricultural land and destroy the river’s fish and shrimp as early as May or June of this year. "A River Runs Through Us," International Rivers' film about the movement to protect rivers and rights, has been selected to show at the Environmental Film Festival in the US Capitol on March 24.

Jason Rainey will present at the University of Pretoria's Postgraduate School of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Public Policy and Governance Platform’s Brown Bag seminar on "Rivers, Dams & Energy: Hydropower in the context of Climate Change."

International Rivers is excited about this year's Wild & Scenic Film Festival - January 10-13th in Nevada City. Executive Director Jason Rainey will discuss the status of the world's rivers in the face of the current hydropower boom. He will also attend the premiere of "Streams of Consequence," a film by James Q Martin that examines alternatives to large dam projects in Chilean Patagonia. International Rivers' Board member Jane Baldwin will show her film "Kara Women Speak," a story of indigenous Ethiopian women whose lives depend on the Omo River.

Local Action, Global Impact: Holding Governments and Corporations Accountable for Polluting China's Rivers. Join our local partner, Pacific Environment, for this happy hour event featuring a talk by Zhao Zhong, a TIME Hero of the Environment, founder of Green Camel Bell, and now Pacific Environment’s China program coordinator. Zhao Zhong will share stories of successful grassroots strategies that force polluters to clean up their act.
