About Us

For nearly 30 years, International Rivers has worked to protect rivers around the world and defend the rights of communities that depend on them. Now, for the first time, our 20-year-old program is operating out of South Africa.

International Rivers opposes the building of destructive dams and the development model they represent. We encourage better ways of meeting people's needs for water, energy and protection from damaging floods. We collaborate with a global network of local communities, social movements, non-governmental organizations and other partners.

The main goal of our Africa program is to defend critical river ecosystems and the rights of communities that depend on them from the threat of destructive large dams. Current campaigns include the Mphanda Nkuwa Dam in Mozambique (with a special focus on climate risks), the Inga dams on the Congo River (with special focus on bridging Africa's energy divide) and the Gibe 3 Dam and other destructive dams in Ethiopia (with special focus on human rights abuses and environmental destruction).

Rudo A. Sanyanga, International Rivers' Africa Programme Director, has many years of experience working on the Zambezi River and the dams that threaten its well-being. Come meet Rudo and learn about key dams campaigns, with a special focus on our climate work. Our recent 12-minute Google earth animated video Wrong Climate for Damming Rivers will be shown.
