During the Tenth Session of the International Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, we celebrate the launch of Ríos Silenciados: Ecología y Política de las Grandes Represas, the much–awaited Spanish version of the acclaimed book Silenced Rivers: The Ecology and Politics of Large Dams, by Patrick McCully. The Spanish version was translated and edited by PROTEGER – Amigos de la Tierra (FoE Argentina).

Mr. McCully, Campaigns Director for International Rivers, will be part of a panel presentation on the topic of dams and climate change – a widely covered subject in Ríos Silenciados – at the COP10 meeting.

In addition to Mr. McCully, the panel will include Moira Millán, representative of the Mapuche Indian tribe threatened by hydro projects on the Carrenleufú river (Patagonia); Elías Díaz Peña, Goldman Prize winner, Sobrevivencia–Amigos de la Tierra, Paraguay; Elba Stancich, Taller Ecologista, Rosario; Jorge Cappato, editor of the Spanish version of Silenced Rivers.

Mr. McCully is the co–author of Imperiled Planet (MIT Press, 1990) and The Road to Rio: An NGO Action Guide to Environment and Development (International Books, 1993). In 1992–93, he was editor of NGONET, an information service for NGOs based in Uruguay.

Since 1992 Mr. McCully has worked on many dam–related campaigns, in particular in supporting the struggle of the Narmada Bachao Andolan/Save the Narmada Movement against dams on the Narmada River in India. He is a former member of the World Commission on Dams Forum and of the Reference Group that oversaw the establishment of the World Commission on Dams.

Mr. McCully is a member of the Steering Committee of the UN Environment Programme’s Dams and Development Project (www.unep.org/dams) and a member of the UNEP Dams and Development Forum.
