SOS for Patagonia

By:
Berklee Lowrey-Evans

As we celebrate our independence in the United States this weekend, Chileans will be demanding that their government follow the will of the people and cancel the HidroAysén project in Patagonia.

Events are scheduled for Friday July 1 and Saturday July 2 all over Chile, as well as in Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Mexico City.

Before you head out of town for the 4th of July, please join the worlwide protest to protect Patagonia by sending a letter to the Embassy of Chile in the US, and then asking your friends to do so, too.

As I watch the fireworks with my family on Monday night, I'll be reflecting on this amazing movement in Chile, and hoping that Chileans can also win their freedom this year - the freedom to choose what their own future looks like, without it being dictated by powerful corporations.

May another star-spangled banner wave high this weekend, over the land of the free-flowing rivers. Happy Independence Day, everyone.
