Giving Thanks for Rivers on #GivingTuesday

At International Rivers, we know that every river has a story. Social media has become an amazing way for people to tell these stories to each other, and an inspiring window into the diversity of our experiences with rivers. As the person behind most of International Rivers' social media for the past five years, I love to use these platforms to help people around the world connect with each other and realize that they're part of a massive global movement. I also love being able to see in real time the impact our information can have on people. Every "like," "share" and "retweet" means you care about the same things we do – healthy rivers and vibrant communities. But my most favorite thing of all is when people share their own stories about why rivers are important – to them, their communities, or the planet.

Me at the top of Caleta Tortel, overlooking the mouth of the Río Baker in Chilean Patagonia. The Baker is important to me because it runs through a breathtaking part of the world, and it would be ruined by hydroelectric dams if HidroAysén is built. It would be an example of very shortsighted development with long-term consequences.

So for #GivingTuesday, we want to hear your river stories.

The first 10 people who tweet us their river story will win either a one-year subscription to World Rivers Review or a copy of A River Runs Through Us. Be sure to include @IntlRivers and #GivingTuesday in your tweet.

Don't worry, we love Facebook, too. We'll also have prizes for the first 10 people who share their river stories on our Facebook page. Please include #GivingTuesday and @InternationalRivers in your post, and a picture of the river you're talking about, if you can.

We'll contact the winners via the platform on which you posted.

Of course, you can also participate in #GivingTuesday by donating to International Rivers. Every little bit helps us create the kind of world we all want – one where our rivers are healthy and free-flowing, and people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. For people, water and life on Earth, please find a way to participate in #GivingTuesday.
