Federal Court judge Antonio Carlos de Almeida Campelo in Altamira partially accepted arguments by the Federal Attorney's office and suspended the acceptance of the environmental studies for Belo Monte Dam. Environmental licensing authority Ibama had accepted the studies on May 25, despite problems verified by its technical team. Ibama will now have to clarify the situation in the courts.

The principal argument submitted was the fact that studies on impacts on indigenous peoples were incomplete.
