Creative Ways to Ensure that our Rivers are Protected!

River activists' banner hung over the Cleveland Dam drew lots of attention from passersby
River activists' banner hung over the Cleveland Dam drew lots of attention from passersby

Free Flowing Rivers Environmental Society, a non-profit that is based out of Vancouver, planned two exciting events to celebrate the Day of Action. On the 14th, they sent as many letters as they possibly could to the provinical government in protest of the construction of a private run-of-river power project and transmission line on the Upper Pitt River that would cut across pristine wilderness. Letters should have been (and still can be) sent to PineconeBurke@gov.bc.ca. People who sent a copy of their letter to freeflowingrivers@gmail.com were entered in a drawing for a free rafting trip! On the 15th, people congregated at the Cleveland Dam in North Vancouver to paint a large banner demonstrating a message against the construction of dams, and also participated in a kayak run on the Capilano River.

Un-Dam the Klamath River, and Come Celebrate, Too!

The Klamath Riverkeeper and other groups hosted a benefit dinner to raise money and support to bring down the Klamath dams. Guests enjoyed a full dinner accompanied by live acoustic music, and a multi-media presentation about last year’s trip to Omaha for the Berkshire-Hathaway annual shareholder meeting. Following dinner, there was a silent auction, a donation-only beer & wine bar, and lastly, the deep groove of live funk and reggae music, featuring Chris Wixson & Friends doing a rocking funk set and live reggae by Woven Root. All of the proceeds from the event will support trips to PacifiCorp headquarters in Portland, Oregon and to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway’s shareholders meeting in Omaha for stake-holders in the Klamath Crisis to make their voices heard!
